  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • ⅔ cup beef broth
  • 1 ½ cups 2% milk
  • ½ cup half and half
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon dijon mustard
  • 2 ounces cream cheese
  • 3 ½ cups shredded cheddar cheese (divided)
  • 1½ tablespoons butter (for topping)
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
  • salt/pepper to taste
  • fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. 1. Cook elbow macaroni in salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  2. 2. In the same pot, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour to form a paste; cook for one minute.
  3. 3. Gradually add beef broth while whisking continuously, then stir in milk and half-and-half until thickened.
  4. 4. Add salt, pepper, dijon mustard, cream cheese, and half of the cheddar cheese; stir until melted and smooth.
  5. 5. Mix cooked macaroni into the cheese sauce until evenly coated.
  6. 6. For the topping: Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat; add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant. Stir in panko breadcrumbs until golden brown.
